The past couple of weeks have been very busy with various projects and performances taking place - last weekend was the seocnd of my Super Dynamite Boogaloo events at Brighton's fashionable Komedia venue - basically it was like Dynamite Boogaloo with bells on - a fabulous, extended cabaret featuring Dolly Rocket, Le Gateau Chocolat and the Sparklemotion Showponies - and among other treats, Dolly Rocket was predicting the future in her fortune-telling booth. We're doing another of these nights at Komedia on the 29th September, and then a Christmas Spectacular on the 15th December at Concorde 2!!! Of course you don't have to wait until then to have the full Boogaloo Experience - we are at Audio in Brighton every Thursday night for the usual hi-jinks and shenanigans...
This weekend it was Brighton Pride and we did a Dynamite Boogaloo party up at the Open House near Preston Park which is where the whole festival happens - Brighton Pride has grown over the years to become the biggest event of its kind in the UK - indeed it's probably the biggest in Europe. I have to say I'm not a fan of these events - being surrounded by pill-popping muscle marys in a field is actually my idea of hell - but there's always a lot of cooler club kids who enjoy the day and then wind their way up to the Open House, often a little worse for wear...anyway it was a goo 'un and we are already looking forward to doing an even bigger Pride fundraiser at the Open House next year. On Sunday, I did a special radio show which was broadcast for 4 hours to the After Pride Street Party on St James St in Brighton...I played a four hour set of party pop anthems for the hardcore who were still out partying!
This week the club I do in London, Shinky Shonky, celebrates it's 10th anniversary...we'll be celebrating 10 years with smutty cabaret antics, free naughty badges and power pop anthems at the Oak Bar in London's fashionable Stoke Newington district.
Then on Saturday I'm off to Scotland for a week at the Edinburgh Festival - for once I'm not performing there, I'm having a holiday and checking out loads of amazing shows.
Meantime, my new album 'Enough About You...Let's Talk About Me' is finally out in January on i-Tunes - you can preview some of the tracks and watch the video for the single 'Just Want You To Know' on my MySpace page.
*cavalcade chart
1. Roisin Murphy 'Overpowered' (EMI)
2. Robyn 'With Every Heartbeat' (Konichiwa)
3. Siouxsie 'Into A Swan' (W14)
4. Asobi Seksu 'Thursday' (One Little Indian)
5. Taken By Trees 'Lost And Found' (Rough Trade)
6. Maps 'You Don't Know Her Name' (Mute)
7. Rumble Strips 'Girls And Boys In Love' (Island)
8. Reverend And The Makers 'He Said He Loved me' (Wall Of Sound)
9. Euros Child 'Horse Riding' (Wichita)
10. Candie Payne 'One More Chance' (Deltasonic)
Moloko's ice-maiden Roisin Murphy returns to the fray with 'Overpowered', a glacial slice of dance-pop - I can't wait to hear the album - she has collaborated with Richard X, Groove Armada, Calvin Harris and Cathy Dennis on this so it looks set to be one of this years ultra-modern pop highlights! The video for 'Overpowered' is amazing too - check it out on YouTube. The Robyn album is also shaping up to be magnificent. 'With Every Heartbeat' sounds like Kate Bush guesting with Massive Attack. Siouxsie has split with her long-time lover and collaborator Budgie, and 'Into A Swan' is the first single from of her forthcoming debut solo albums; it's still as edgy and visceral as ever, I really love this. You will be thrilled to learn that 'Asobi Seksu' is Japanese for 'Casual Sex' and the single 'Thursday' is equally thrilling - a modern-day shoegazing anthem, like the Cocteau Twins meets My Bloody Valentine. Elsewhere in this weeks Top Ten the 60's Beatpop revival continues apace with tunes from Candie Payne and Reverend & The Makers both harking back to the glory days of Phil Spector and Joe Meek. |
