crooked stylus
An umbrella show for sheltering outsider/edge music of all kind. From the extra-terrestrial to the troglodyte we cover experimental, electronic, punk, funk and junk, all overheard by resident avant-gardeners Darius Akashic & DJ Bod.

We say ‘Hurrah!’ to those who dare to be different and ‘Yah Boo Sucks!’ to musical compliance and the takers of an easy route to sonic creativity.

*special show (8-June-2007)

Welcome to another episode in the ever devolving whirld of crooked stylus brought to you this week by the colour grey and the number zero

As promised, the long awaited session provided by matthew waldron aka irr.app.(ext.) and member of the current line up of nurse with wound

Matt has collated nearly three hours of material culled from projects dating from 1992 right up to the present day and includes rare and unreleased tracks from his solo works as well as collaborations with r k faulhaber, sigtryggur sigmarsson, jim haynes, andrew liles, at jennie richie, faun fables, xambuca, thomas carnacki and songs of the new erotics plus a couple of production works for joolie wood and diana rogerson.

I’ll keep my talking to a functional minimum (for a blessed change…) so pin your ears back for something rather special….

Disc One
1. irr. app. (ext.) : The Jolly Trepanner is Whistling in the Woods A track created for a compilation project in 2004 -- to date, still unreleased
2. irr. app. (ext.) : The Emperor of Disgust
From the still-unreleased 2001 album "Radiant Black Future"
3. irr. app. (ext.) : Scottish Toasts (live at Brainwaves, November 8th
2006) Recorded on the second day of the Brainwaves festival in Arlington, Massachusetts. The line-up for this show was Matthew Waldron, Richard Faulhaber and Jim Haynes. Richard is leading the toasts.
4. irr. app. (ext.) : Org-Tierchen A track contributed to the ffwd #3 magazine/DVD project, released by the Italian label Invernomuto in 2005. The track was constructed entirely out of 2 minutes of quiet radio static, provided by the project coordinators.
5. irr. app. (ext.) : Knowing Me, Knowing You. An interpretation of the ABBA song recorded at the request of the Nihlist label and released on the "Masters of the Scene" compilation in 2002.
6. irr. app. (ext.) : Whittling Little Crosses for a Half-Sleeping
Heresiarch Released by Plate Lunch in 2000 on a very scarce split 7" with Rats With Wings.
7. irr. app. (ext.) : Improv/Smelly Tongues (live at Brainwaves, November 8th 2006) Finale to the Brainwaves festival, featuring a ridiculous cover version of an early track by the Residents.
8. Faulhaber/Haynes/Sigmarsson/Stapleton/Waldron : The Sleeping Moustache,Part 3 From an album released by the Helen Scarsdale Agency in 2006. This collaboration was instigated by the fourth annual San Francisco Electronic
Music Festival in 2003, which included performances by Jim Haynes, irr. app.(ext.) and Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson.
9. Nurse With Wound : Hindu Monastery Breakfast The first Nurse recording I was involved with – albeit in a very minor way. This track was created by Steven Stapleton and Petr Vastl at Petr's Galway home studio (and in his kitchen) for the Sonic Catering Band's 2001 remix album "Artifical Additives".
10. irr. app. (ext.) + Nurse With Wound : No Beard, No Balls, No Face One of four tracks created for a irr/NWW collaborative record in 2002, which was ultimately set aside in favour of other projects. This is a rough mix: whenever this material is released it will be re-constructed from the source
materials with inevitably very different results (since all the multitrack files were lost the following year in a computer crash).
11. Nurse With Wound : Black Teeth (live at Sala Apolo, Barcelona, February24th 2007) The second appearance of this song in a NWW set, originally written for an event organised by Faun Fables in May 2006. The line-up for this show was Steven Stapleton, Colin Potter, Diana Rogerson, Andrew Liles, Jenifer Monroe Scharpen and Matthew Waldron.
12. irr. app. (ext.) + Andrew Liles : Ape Greasing Resonant Curvature Around Antiseptic Orifice. A track created for the Andrew Liles remix compilation "In My Father's House are Many Mansions", released by the Fourth Dimension label in 2006.

Disc Two
1. Diana Rogerson : Behind the Curtain of the Sun. A track from Diana's album "The Lights are On, But No-One's Home", Released in 2007 by Jnana. I was very fortunate to have Diana invite me to contribute to this record, and even more fortunate to have her make use of many of my contributions. I think this is a rough mix: the finished album hasn't been circulated yet, so I don't know how different it is.
2. Faun Fables : With Words and Cake (live at Bottom of the Hill, SanFrancisco, July 15th 2005). One of two Faun Fables songs for which Dawn McCarthy had me create pre-recorded backing for use in her solo live performances. This version also has me adding live percussion – the second occasion that I've performed on stage with Dawn. A studio version of this track is likely to appear onthe next Faun Fables album.
3. Joolie Wood : Melt With the Snow (alternate version)
A track from Joolie's forthcoming debut solo album, to which she had me add some percussion, harmonica and various audio embellishments. I was invited to do this after contributing some of the same instruments to this song at
the end of her first full-length solo show at the Chantier Festival in Paris on May 7th 2006. The track has since undergone dramatic re-recording and remixing, so the album version will sound completely different from this
one.
4. R K Faulhaber : Conversions The title track from Richard Faulhaber's 1996 cassette release. This was the 7th of 8 cassette albums created by Richard between 1989 and 1996 (only four of which were ever made available in any way).
5. R K Faulhaber : Interlude X An unreleased piece created on the Buchla synthesizer in the early 1990s.
6. R K Faulhaber : Coccolithophora (excerpt)
A excerpt from a track created in 2007 for Richard's forthcoming debut CD(after more than 20 years of recording music!). Possibly a different mix from what will appear on the album.
7. R K Faulhaber + Matthew Waldron + Sasha Bogdanowitsch : Improvisation
1992 (excerpt) A short excerpt from an hour-long, more-or-less spontaeous improvisation that Richard and I performed with a visiting former classmate of his in the apartment that the two of us shared for a couple of years. I didn't really
know how to play anything back then: hence, the retarded percussion. Sasha did know how to play a lot of things, and probably still does. He provided the wind playing and the vocals.
8. irr. app. (ext.) + R K Faulhaber : Lost Transmission (edit)
One of four tracks created for a never-completed irr. app. (ext.)/R K Faulhaber collaborative project back in 1993. A very crude sound created on very primitive equipment (same as the first irr. CD "An Uncertain Animal"), but it still holds some charm for me.
9. R K Faulhaber + Xambuca : Rehearsal, January 10th 2007 (excerpt) A rehearsal for a collaborative performance in which I was originally going to participate, but had to cancel my involvement because it was taking place at the same time as a Nurse With Wound show. So I just watched and recorded
instead.
10. irr. app. (ext.) + Stilluppsteypa : Pricked Membrane Articulates
Discomfort. Another old, primitive-sounding track created for the long-out-of-print irr.app. (ext.)/Stilluppsteyapa collaborative album "Tpith or Tetapth", released
by Stilluppsteypa's label Fire Inc. in 1997.
11. irr. app. (ext.) + Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson : Pining for Azoth (Whilst Gaseous) (excerpt) An excerpt from a track created for Siggi's solo album "A Little Lost", released by Bottrop Boy in 2003.
12. irr. app. (ext.) + at jennie richie : Night Wearing Feathers
(excerpt) An excerpt from the first of three planned collaborative releases betweenirr and ajr. Released in 2006 by Psychform.
13. at jennie richie : Hunns to Themselves
From ajr's cassette EP "Absurd Machine Drama", released by Stentorian Tapes in 2005.

Disc Three
1. Jim Haynes : Telegraphy by the Sea (excerpt)
From Jim's 2006 album of the same name, released by the Helen Scarsdale Agency in 2006. For the previous year, Jim has been a member of the irr.app. (ext.) live ensemble (as well as running one of the only reliable labels to have released irr. recordings).
2. Xambuca : Vapunaatto
From the self-released 2006 album "Gestalt Screams from Imaginary People". During the past year Xambuca (Vivek Chandra Shukla) has organised live performances that have sometimes included R K Faulhaber and (less frequently) myself.
3. Thomas Carnacki + Jesse Burson : Polyp Ride, Part 2
A track from Thomas Carnacki's 2007self-released debut album "Far Voyage from a Placid Island". Carnacki (Gregory Scharpen) has been a participant in all but two of irr. app. (ext.)'s live performances, and his voice has
appeared on a couple irr. tracks.
4. Songs of the New Erotics: Bobby (excerpt)
An excerpt from the 2006 self-released 3" CD of the same name. SOTNE(William Davison) is a Toronto-based surrealist writer/artist/musician, who made a spectacular contribution as part of the line-up for the 6th irr. app.(ext.) performance in June of 2005.

Darius AkashicDarius Akashic
a self-professed vinyl junkie, first started putting on free acid house parties in Brighton at the end of '88 and hasn't looked back. Since then, Darius has been flown to France, Iceland, Japan, Spain and Greece to ply his vinyl trade. He has also held residencies at Megatripolis (Heaven, London), Slack & Nanasuma (Brighton) and Arrowhead (Hastings).

Bod
played in an improvisational psychedelic rock band called Lumpsucker from 1989 until 1992 - blowing up PA's around the North-East. He sold records in the ultra snooty underground store Volume and then played in the super tight Like A Virgin for 3 months in 1994 before relocating to Brighton and losing sanity to the free party scene. Bod recently teamed up with Darius Akashic on Crooked Stylus, to transcend genres and concentrate on what's good.
