Founded in 1990 by Dave Cawley and Alex Knight, Fat Cat began as an electronic-based record store in Crawley. Moving to London's Covent Garden in 1991, the shop developed an avid fanbase in the expanding electronic scene. Regular customers included Andrew Weatherall, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Richie Hawtin, Mu-Ziq, Aphex Twin and Black Dog.

From the start, Dave & Alex wanted the Fatcat record label to cover more than techno or post-techno music. They signed and developed Sigur Rós, Black Dice, Set Fire To Flames, David Grubbs, Mum, Xinlisupreme, Animal Collective, Mice Parade, Him, Crescent, Giddy Motors, and Stromba.

2000 saw the release of the E-RMX series - an underground remix project based around the release of eight 7” singles and a website, www.e-rmx.com, which The Wire described as "genuinely state-of-the-art".
